AI content (AI info) label on Instagram: why it shows up and how to post a clean copy
Updated
Instagram adds the AI content label (it has also been worded AI info, and it launched as Made with AI) for one of three reasons. The file you uploaded carries an AI signal in its metadata, the person posting turned the label on, or Meta's own systems decided the image was AI. Only the first one lives in the file, so only the first one can be fixed before you post.
Check a file for Instagram label triggers or scrub it now. Both run in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
How Instagram decides to add the AI label
Meta runs one labeling policy across Instagram, Facebook and Threads. In February 2024 Meta said it would label images when it detects "industry standard AI image indicators", meaning C2PA Content Credentials and IPTC metadata that apps write into the file. It named Google, OpenAI, Microsoft, Adobe, Midjourney and Shutterstock among the companies.
So the trigger is a small block of data inside the file, not what the photo looks like. Instagram's help page on labeling AI content gives a plain example. Photo editing tools that use AI to change the size or color of an image may add a signal saying the content was modified with AI. That is how a real beach photo color-corrected with an AI-assisted tool, or a portrait touched up in Lightroom, comes back labeled.
The second trigger is you. Instagram lets anyone label their own content, and Meta requires it for some. The third is detection. The same help page says images still get a label if Meta's systems detect they were AI-generated. Meta also said in 2024 it was building classifiers to spot AI content that carries no marker. Metadata only covers the first route.
How the label was renamed: Made with AI, AI info, AI content
The name has changed several times.
- May 2024: Meta started showing a "Made with AI" label.
- July 1 2024: Meta renamed it "AI info" across its apps and made it tappable for details.
- September 12 2024: for content Meta detects was only edited with AI tools, the label moved off the post and into the post's menu.
- Since late 2025: many people see "AI content", the name Instagram's current help page uses. Your app may show other wording.
The created versus edited split still matters. Instagram says content with signals that it was created with AI gets the label on the post. Content with signals that it was only modified with AI does not get it directly on the post, story or reel. Tap the Options menu on any post to read what Meta found. If the information shows only in that menu, Instagram read an "edited with AI" signal.
The Add AI label toggle versus the automatic label
The toggle is your own disclosure. According to Instagram's help page, you create a post or a reel and tap the toggle next to Add AI label. For a story, you tap Options in the story, then Label AI, then the same toggle. If you switched it on, the label reflects your choice, and no change to the file touches it.
The automatic label is Meta's call. Instagram notes that if you choose not to identify AI use, a label may still be applied when Meta detects the content was AI-generated or AI-edited. That is the case a scrubbed file can help with, as long as the signal sits in the metadata. The turn off AI label guide walks through both cases.
Profiles have their own label too: an AI-generated profile toggle under Edit profile, which Meta's general help page calls an AI creator label. The AI creator label guide covers it.
How to post a clean copy to Instagram
Clean the file first, then post the copy, never the original. Open ScrubPhoto on your phone.
- Pick the photo or video. The tool shows what it carries, from C2PA and the signing app to GPS, plus a verdict for Instagram.
- Tap Scrub. For JPEG, PNG and WebP the pixels stay byte-for-byte identical, and the color profile stays, so iPhone Display P3 colors look the same.
- Tap Share and choose Save Image on iPhone, or use Download on Android.
- In Instagram, start a post, Reel or Story and choose the saved copy from your library.
For a carousel, scrub every image in the set, not only the cover. If you only want to look, the checker runs the same inspection and leaves the file untouched.
Leave Add AI label on when the content needs it. Meta requires a label on photorealistic video and realistic-sounding audio that was digitally created or altered, and says there may be penalties for skipping it. Still images are not required, though Meta can still label them.
Meta has said it cannot yet read these signals in most third-party video, so Reels labels lean on disclosure. Scrubbing an MP4 or MOV still strips the location and device details that phone cameras write. The Reels and TikTok video guide goes deeper.
What a clean file cannot fix on Instagram
- A label on a post that is already live. Scrubbing changes the file on your phone, not the copy Instagram stored. The only route is to delete the post and upload a clean copy, which drops its likes and comments. See removing AI info after posting.
- A label you added yourself with the toggle.
- Invisible watermarks. Meta AI images carry an invisible watermark plus IPTC metadata, and removing the metadata leaves the watermark. Instagram also says Meta AI images that are downloaded and uploaded again receive an AI content label. Google's SynthID sits in the pixels the same way; see can you remove SynthID.
- Meta's own detection, which needs no metadata at all.
One trade-off runs the other way. Instagram's camera capture help page describes a Captured with a camera label, added when Meta can verify secure capture data. Instagram's own camera adds that data today, with other C2PA cameras planned. Scrubbing removes all C2PA, so a scrubbed file cannot earn that label.
Facebook and Threads follow the same Meta rules with different menus; see the Facebook page and the Threads page. TikTok reads C2PA its own way, covered on the TikTok page.
Questions about the Instagram AI info label
What does AI info mean on Instagram?
It means Meta found a sign that AI helped make or edit the photo or video, or the person posting labeled it. Tap the label or open the post's Options menu to see the details. The newer wording for the same label is AI content.
Why does my Instagram post say AI info when I didn't use AI?
Look at the file before anything else. An editing app can write an AI signal into a real photo when you use an AI feature, even a small one like an AI resize or color change. Run the original through the checker to see which app signed it, and read why your post says AI info for the common causes.
Why does my Instagram draft say AI info?
A draft points to one of two things: the Add AI label toggle is on, or Instagram has already read an AI signal in the file you picked. Check the toggle first. If it is off, scrub the original and start a new draft with the clean copy.
How do I turn off AI info on Instagram?
If you added it, switch off the toggle next to Add AI label before you share. Meta's help pages describe no setting for a label Meta applied from the file. Post a scrubbed copy instead, and accept that detection can still label it.
How do I remove AI info from an Instagram post after posting?
A file tool cannot reach a live post, because Instagram keeps the copy you uploaded. Delete the post, scrub the original, and post again, knowing the likes and comments go with the old post. If you added the label yourself, open Edit on the post and look for the AI label option first; the wording changes.
Does Facetune trigger the Made with AI label on Instagram?
It can, if the export carries an AI signal. Apps change what they write between versions, so test your own export in the checker.
