AI content (AI info) label on Threads: how Meta decides and what you can change
Updated
Threads puts the AI content label (also worded AI info, and first called Made with AI) on a post when the photo or video attached to it carries an AI signal, when you add the label yourself, or when the media came from Meta's AI tools. The automatic label is about the attached media, not the words you type. Clean the image before you attach it, and if the post is shared from Instagram, clean it before the Instagram post, since that is where the Threads copy comes from.
Check a file for Threads label triggers or scrub it now. Both run in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
How Threads decides to label a post
Threads runs on the same Meta policy as Instagram and Facebook, and Meta's February 2024 announcement on labeling AI images named all three apps. Meta's help page, Label AI content on Threads, sets out how it works in plain terms. Content may be labeled automatically when it contains AI signals, or you can label it yourself when you share.
The signals are industry-standard markers that AI tools write into a file. Meta has described them as C2PA Content Credentials and IPTC metadata. The Threads help page uses a collage made in a common photo editor as its example of content that may carry one. Meta's systems read that signal to decide whether a label is needed.
On a text-first app this has a practical side. Threads is built around words. The label question only comes up when you attach something, and then it is about that file. A screenshot of a chart, a photo from last night, a meme you exported from an editor: each one brings along whatever data its app wrote.
The help page splits labels into two kinds. When the signal says an AI tool created the media, the thread shows an AI content label. When the signal says AI only modified it, nothing shows on the thread itself, and the details wait in the post's menu.
What the Threads AI label is called
People search "threads ai label" because the name keeps shifting. Meta's wording changed across all its apps: Made with AI from May 2024, AI info from July 1 2024, and since September 2024 a menu-only note for content that was only edited with AI. The current Threads help page uses "AI content". Expect the wording in the app to change again.
Meta AI images are their own case. Post one straight from Meta's AI tools and Threads may label it above or on the content, sometimes with a visible Imagined with AI watermark. Content made with Meta's AI tools, downloaded, then uploaded to Threads also receives an AI content label.
Adding the AI label yourself on Threads
The Threads help page gives a two-step version: create a post on Threads, then open the composer option it shows as an icon and choose Add AI label. People then see an AI content label on the post. If you choose not to label, the page says an AI content label will be applied if Meta detects the content was AI-generated.
Some content needs the label. Under Meta's rule, a label is required on realistic-looking video and realistic-sounding audio that was generated or altered digitally, AI included. Leaving it off can bring penalties, Meta says. Its examples include a song made with AI-generated vocals. Images do not need a label under Meta's rule, but they still get one if Meta's systems detect AI.
How to attach a clean image to a Threads post
Threads follows Meta's rules, so the Instagram or Facebook verdict in the tool applies here too. Open ScrubPhoto on your phone.
- Pick the images or video you plan to attach. The tool reads them in your browser and shows any C2PA claim and who signed it, the IPTC source type, the creator tool, EXIF software, and whether GPS is present.
- Tap Scrub. JPEG, PNG and WebP keep identical pixels and their color profile. MP4 and MOV keep the same size, with no re-encode.
- Tap Share and save the copy, or Download it.
- In Threads, write the post, attach the clean copy, and check the AI label option before you publish.
Posting from a computer? Pick several files, scrub them, and use Download all for a .zip. Unzip it before attaching, since Threads wants the image files themselves.
The checker does the inspection alone if you only want to see what a file says.
Sharing from Instagram to Threads
You can also post to Threads from Instagram. Instagram's help page, Share your Instagram posts to Threads, describes the flow. Before sharing a post, you tap Also share on, then the toggle next to your Threads account, and choose Always share posts or Share this post.
That makes the Instagram upload the moment to clean the file. Scrub it before you start the Instagram post, and the copy that reaches Threads starts from the same clean file.
Deleting works differently. Instagram's page says that if you delete an Instagram post you shared to Threads, you need to go to your Threads profile and delete it there too. So if you take down a labeled Instagram post to repost a clean copy, the labeled Threads copy stays up until you remove it.
We could not find a Meta page that says whether a label always carries from the Instagram post to the Threads copy. Check the Threads copy's menu after it goes up.
What a clean file cannot change on Threads
- A label on a thread that is already posted. Threads holds the copy you uploaded, so the fix is to delete the post and share a clean copy, which loses its replies and reposts. The after-posting guide covers the same trade on Instagram.
- A label you added with Add AI label.
- The invisible watermark Meta adds to Meta AI images. Removing metadata does not touch it.
- Meta's own detection, which can label an image with no metadata at all.
- Labels on video. Meta's 2024 statement said it could not yet spot these signals in most video from other companies' tools, which leaves video labels mostly to disclosure.
For the background on why a file says AI in the first place, read why an Instagram post says AI info and what C2PA Content Credentials are. The same rules play out with different menus on the Instagram page and the Facebook page.
Questions about the Threads AI label
How do I remove AI info from a Threads post?
If Meta added it from the file, delete the post, scrub the original image, and post again with the clean copy. If you added it yourself, the label came from the Add AI label option, so leave that off next time when the content does not need it. A file tool cannot change a post that is already live.
Why does my Threads post have an AI label?
One of three things happened: the attached image or video carries an AI signal from the app that made or edited it, you added the label, or Meta's systems detected AI. Open the post's menu to see what Meta found, then run the original through the checker to see which app signed it.
How do I add an AI label on Threads?
Create the post, open the composer option Meta's help page shows as an icon, and choose Add AI label. Readers then see an AI content label on the post.
If I share my Instagram post to Threads, do I need to delete both?
Yes. Instagram's help page says deleting the Instagram post does not delete the Threads copy, so remove it from your Threads profile as well. Then share the clean copy again.
Does Threads label AI images from Meta AI?
Yes. Meta says content made with its AI tools may be labeled when shared to Threads, and content downloaded from Meta AI and uploaded again also gets an AI content label. The invisible watermark stays in those images whatever you do to the metadata.
