No photo handy?

1080 x 1350 is Instagram's portrait size: 1080 pixels wide and 1350 tall, a 4:5 ratio. It fills more of the screen than a square, and it is the tallest feed size that every way of posting accepts. Choose your photos above, pick crop or whole photo, and save copies that are ready to post.

Instagram photo sizes

Use Ratio Size in pixels
Portrait feed post 4:5 1080 × 1350
Tall portrait feed post, from the app 3:4 1080 × 1440
Square feed post 1:1 1080 × 1080
Landscape feed post 1.91:1 1080 × 566
Story or Reel 9:16 1080 × 1920

Instagram's help center says photos are uploaded at up to 1080 pixels wide. Feed photos keep their shape anywhere from 1.91:1 landscape to 3:4 portrait, a height between 566 and 1440 pixels at full width. A photo outside that range gets cropped to fit. Wider photos are sized down to 1080 pixels, so a bigger file gains nothing.

Why 1080 x 1350 is the safe portrait size

The Instagram app accepts photos up to 3:4, which is 1080 x 1440. Posts published through Instagram's API, which scheduling tools and many apps use, must stay between 4:5 and 1.91:1. 1080 x 1350 works on both routes, so it is the default here. If you post from the Instagram app and want the tallest photo, pick 3:4.

Since January 2025, the profile grid shows taller rectangles instead of squares. A tall portrait loses less in the grid, and the full photo shows when someone taps it.

How to resize a photo for Instagram

  1. Choose your photos. Pick several to size a whole carousel at once.
  2. Pick a size. 4:5 portrait is already selected, and you can switch at any time.
  3. Pick a fit. Crop to fill trims the edges, and you drag the preview to choose what stays. Whole photo keeps everything and adds white or black bars.
  4. On a phone, tap Share, then Save Image. On a computer, tap Download. With several photos, Download all saves one zip.

Carousels: size every photo the same

In a carousel post, the orientation you choose applies to every photo, and Instagram does not let you pick a different one per photo. A landscape shot in a portrait carousel gets cropped hard. Resize every photo to the same size first, and use Whole photo for any shot you do not want trimmed.

A clean copy, without the hidden data

The resized photo is drawn fresh from its pixels and saved as a new JPEG. The copy carries no GPS location, no camera model or serial number, and no AI tags such as C2PA Content Credentials or the IPTC "made with AI" field. Meta says it reads those AI tags when it decides to show the AI content label. Resizing cannot remove an invisible watermark such as SynthID, and it cannot change a label already on a live post.

Want to keep the original size and every pixel instead? Use the lossless AI label and metadata remover. Resizing always saves the photo again. The remover never does.

Questions about Instagram photo sizes

What size is 1080x1350?

It is 1080 pixels wide and 1350 pixels tall, a 4:5 portrait ratio. It is Instagram's standard portrait size for feed posts.

Is 1080x1350 the best size for Instagram?

For portrait feed posts it is the safest choice, because it works in the app and through scheduling tools. From the app alone, 3:4 at 1080 x 1440 is taller.

How do I post a whole photo on Instagram without cropping?

Choose Whole photo above. The tool fits the entire photo inside 1080 x 1350 and fills the rest with white or black bars, so Instagram has nothing left to crop.

Why does Instagram crop my photo?

Feed photos outside the 1.91:1 to 3:4 range are cropped to fit, and every photo in a carousel takes the orientation you chose for the post. Resizing to one of the sizes above first avoids both.

What size are Instagram Stories and Reels?

They are 9:16, which is 1080 x 1920 at full width. Pick 9:16 Story or Reel above.

Does resizing lower the quality?

The copy is saved as a high-quality JPEG at the width Instagram uses. Instagram compresses every upload again anyway, so start from the sharpest original you have.

Does resizing remove the AI info label?

It removes the AI tags stored in the file, because the copy is saved without metadata. It cannot remove invisible watermarks or a label already on a post, and platform rules may still ask you to disclose AI content. Read every limit.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser and the photos stay on your device.
