iPhone Clean Up and AI labels: what the photo carries

Updated

Apple's support pages for Clean Up do not say what metadata the tool writes, so the reliable answer is to run your own photo through the checker. What Apple has said is that photos adjusted with Apple Intelligence will carry a hidden SynthID watermark, arriving in a software update later in 2026. ScrubPhoto can remove metadata like location from a Clean Up photo, but it cannot remove that watermark.

Check a file for Instagram, TikTok and Facebook label triggers or scrub it now. Both run in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

What Apple has said about Clean Up edits

Apple's Clean Up requirements page calls Clean Up a feature powered by Apple Intelligence in the Photos app. It lists iPhone 16 models, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, running iOS 18.1 or later.

In a June 2026 newsroom post, Apple said photos adjusted with Apple Intelligence will automatically include a hidden SynthID watermark that identifies them as edited with AI. The same post announced an upgraded Clean Up tool for iOS 27. Apple's September 14 2026 update notes then said SynthID support comes in a software update later this year, for most edited images. SynthID is Google DeepMind's watermark, and it lives in the pixels, not in the metadata.

We found no Apple page saying whether Clean Up also writes C2PA Content Credentials or IPTC fields into the file. Treat that as unknown until you check your own export.

What every iPhone photo already carries

Apple's guide to photo information lists what Photos stores with a picture. That includes the device that took it, the date and time, camera details like lens and shutter speed, and where it was taken. Most of that is EXIF data, and it travels with the file unless something removes it. For many people the location matters more than any AI label. Our iPhone metadata guide covers the privacy side in depth.

Which platforms react to a Clean Up photo

On Meta's apps the trigger is C2PA or IPTC data in the file, plus anything the uploader declares. On TikTok, per its May 2024 announcement, the trigger is Content Credentials. If the checker finds neither in your Clean Up photo, metadata gives those platforms no reason to label it. If it finds either, expect the label for an AI-edited photo in the post's menu, where Meta moved it in September 2024. Instagram's version now reads AI info; it has also appeared as AI content, and it began as Made with AI.

SynthID is a different question. Google DeepMind's SynthID page says Gemini, Search and Chrome look for the mark, and that its detector will soon cover content from Apple. Whether Instagram or TikTok scan for it is up to them, so check their help pages.

How to scrub a Clean Up photo on iPhone

  1. Open ScrubPhoto in Safari and tap to add photos from your library.
  2. Read the panel: C2PA, IPTC digital source type, EXIF camera and software, and "GPS: present" if location is stored.
  3. Tap Scrub, then Share, and choose Save Image.

iPhone Safari does not support web share targets, so ScrubPhoto will not appear in the share sheet inside Photos. You open the site and use the Share button in the tool instead. A JPEG keeps its exact pixels and its Display P3 color profile. HEIC photos are re-saved as JPEG at quality 95, and the tool labels that result re-encoded, not lossless.

What scrubbing cannot change on an iPhone photo

Once Apple's update adds the SynthID mark, it stays in the pixels. The SynthID guide covers why pixel watermarks survive a metadata scrub. A label you add yourself when posting also stays. If you would rather post a photo with no Clean Up edit at all, Apple's guide says you can undo Clean Up after saving by tapping Reset in the editor. Meta also still expects you to disclose a photorealistic video or realistic audio clip that was created or altered digitally, scrubbed or not.

Questions about iPhone Clean Up and AI labels

Does Clean Up add an AI label to iPhone photos?

Apple has not documented a metadata label for Clean Up on the pages we checked. It has said that photos adjusted with Apple Intelligence will carry a hidden SynthID watermark once a software update later in 2026 adds it. Run your photo through the checker to see what metadata it holds.

Can I remove the SynthID watermark from an iPhone photo?

No. The watermark is woven into the image, and ScrubPhoto copies the image data byte for byte, so the mark survives untouched. The tool does not detect it either.

Does removing metadata from an iPhone photo lower quality?

Not for JPEG, PNG or WebP, which are cleaned losslessly. HEIC is the exception: the tool re-saves it as a JPEG at quality 95 and says so on the result.

How do I get my original photo back after using Clean Up?

Apple's iPhone guide says you can open the photo in the editor again, go back to the Clean Up tool and tap Reset to undo the changes, even after saving.
