Why a Lightroom photo gets an AI label, and how to remove it
Updated
A real photo edited in Lightroom can pick up an AI label because Adobe writes C2PA Content Credentials into files touched by its generative AI tools, and Meta and TikTok read that data. The usual trigger is Generative Remove, which Adobe's help says is switched on by default inside the Remove tool in Lightroom on desktop. Run your export through the ScrubPhoto tool to strip that metadata without changing a single pixel.
Check a file for Instagram, TikTok and Facebook label triggers or scrub it now. Both run in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
Why Lightroom adds Content Credentials to a real photo
Adobe's generative AI labeling FAQ, updated in August 2026, says C2PA metadata is attached automatically when qualifying generative AI tools create or modify content in Adobe apps. The same page says this covers generative tools only, not traditional AI-powered features, and that the metadata cannot be turned off for qualifying content.
In Lightroom that usually means Generative Remove. Adobe's Lightroom Remove tool page describes it as the Use generative AI option, powered by Adobe Firefly, and says that option is turned on by default. So one brush stroke over a power line can count as a generative edit. When Adobe launched the feature in May 2024, its press release said Content Credentials would be attached automatically to photos edited with it.
Adobe's FAQ does not list every qualifying tool, so test your own export: the checker shows any C2PA manifest and the app that signed it.
The optional Content Credentials you choose at export
There is a second, separate kind. Lightroom Classic and Lightroom on desktop both offer Content Credentials at export, carrying your name, connected social accounts and an overview of edits. Lightroom on desktop keeps default settings for them in its Export preferences, so a choice made months ago can still apply today. If you also published them to Adobe's Content Credentials cloud, scrubbing your file does nothing to that cloud copy.
Which platforms label a Lightroom export
Meta looks for industry standard AI indicators in Instagram, Facebook and Threads uploads, meaning C2PA and IPTC metadata, and labels the post when it finds them. For a retouched photo, as opposed to a fully generated one, Meta said in September 2024 that the label moves into the post's menu. Instagram calls it AI info, though the app has also shown it as AI content and launched it as Made with AI. TikTok announced in May 2024 that images and videos carrying Content Credentials get labeled with no action from the uploader. Pinterest, LinkedIn, YouTube and X post their rules in their help centers, and our Instagram page and TikTok page cover the two biggest.
How to remove the AI label from a Lightroom export
- Export a JPEG, PNG or WebP from Lightroom, the three formats scrubbed losslessly.
- Open the tool and add the file to see the C2PA signer and a verdict for each platform.
- Tap Scrub, then Download, or Share on a phone.
ScrubPhoto removes C2PA Content Credentials, XMP, IPTC and EXIF, including camera serial numbers and GPS location. It keeps the ICC color profile and the orientation, and the pixels in the output are byte-for-byte identical to your export. Everything runs in your browser, so the photo never leaves your device.
To avoid the metadata in the first place, Adobe suggests the Heal and Clone tools for small fixes like sensor spots, and on desktop you can deselect Use generative AI before removing an object.
What scrubbing a Lightroom file cannot change
ScrubPhoto cannot remove anything drawn into the pixels, cannot reach credentials in Adobe's cloud, and cannot undo a label you added yourself when posting. A platform may also run checks of its own, so no tool can promise a post goes unlabeled. Some disclosure is a rule, not a choice: Meta asks anyone posting a photorealistic video or realistic audio made or changed digitally to say so, whatever the metadata says. The full list sits on our limits page.
Questions about Lightroom and AI labels
Why does my Lightroom photo say AI info when I didn't use AI?
The most common cause is the Remove tool's Use generative AI option, which Adobe says is on by default in Lightroom on desktop. Adobe treats that as a generative AI edit and attaches C2PA metadata automatically. The checker confirms it by naming the signing app.
Can I turn off Content Credentials in Lightroom?
You can leave out the optional ones at export. The automatic C2PA from qualifying generative tools cannot be disabled, Adobe says, so skip the generative tool for that edit or scrub the exported copy.
Does removing Content Credentials lower photo quality?
Not for JPEG, PNG or WebP. ScrubPhoto cuts out the metadata segments and never decodes the picture, so the pixels stay identical and color profiles like Display P3 survive.
Will removing it stop Instagram from labeling the photo?
It removes the C2PA and IPTC signals Meta reads. Self-disclosures and a platform's other checks are beyond it, so read a clean result as likely, not certain.
