TikTok AI-generated label: the automatic label versus the creator label

Updated

TikTok shows an AI-generated label for three reasons: the upload carries C2PA Content Credentials, the video used TikTok's own AI effects, or the creator turned on the AI-generated content setting. Removing C2PA from a file before you upload deals with the first reason only. Once a label is on a posted video, TikTok says you cannot remove it.

Check a file for TikTok label triggers or scrub it now. Both run in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

How TikTok decides a video is AI-generated

TikTok was early to read file data. On May 9 2024 TikTok said it was becoming the first video sharing platform to implement Content Credentials, and that it had started to automatically label AI-generated content uploaded from certain other platforms. The rollout began on images and videos, with audio-only content to follow. In the same post TikTok said it would attach Content Credentials to TikTok content, and that they stay on the content when it is downloaded.

TikTok's support page, About AI-generated content, spells out the automatic label. TikTok may apply the "AI-generated" label to content it identifies as completely generated or significantly edited with AI. That can happen when a creator uses TikTok AI effects, or uploads AI content that has Content Credentials attached.

So the file-level trigger on TikTok is C2PA. A clip that passed through an editing app with AI features, or a photo touched up in one, can carry a signed C2PA manifest. TikTok reads it as the upload arrives. Nothing on screen looks different, and the label still appears.

TikTok announced a second layer in late 2025. On November 19 2025 TikTok said it would start adding invisible watermarks to AI content made with TikTok tools like AI Editor Pro, and to content uploaded with C2PA Content Credentials. It described the watermark as one only TikTok can read, meant for cases where labels get removed when content is reuploaded or edited elsewhere.

The two TikTok labels: AI-generated and Creator labeled as AI-generated

TikTok uses two labels, and they work differently.

  • The auto label reads AI-generated. TikTok applies it. The support page says that once your content is labeled this way, you won't be able to remove the label from your post.
  • The creator label reads Creator labeled as AI-generated. You apply it with a setting before posting, and TikTok shows it below your caption.

TikTok first announced the creator tool on September 19 2023, alongside a test of an "AI-generated" label it planned to apply on its own. It also renamed its AI effects that year so "AI" appears in their names.

The AI-generated content setting, and when TikTok requires it

TikTok's support page lists the steps for the app.

For a photo:

  1. Tap the Add post + button and capture your photo.
  2. Tap Post settings at the bottom.
  3. Turn the AI-generated content setting on.

For a video:

  1. Tap the Add post + button.
  2. Record, then tap Continue, or upload a video from your device.
  3. Tap Next.
  4. Tap More options, then turn on the AI-generated content setting.

TikTok's Creator Academy page on the label answers the obvious follow-up. It says you cannot edit or remove the label after posting your video at this time. It also says turning the setting on won't affect distribution, as long as the video doesn't break the Community Guidelines.

The rule on when to use it is clear. TikTok's guidelines require disclosure of content that uses AI or significant edits to show realistic-looking people or scenes, and TikTok may take down AI content that is not labeled. Small edits like color correction, reframing or cropping do not need it. A clean file changes none of that, and other platforms have similar rules for photorealistic AI video and audio.

How to upload a scrubbed video or photo to TikTok

Scrub the final file, the one you are about to upload, not a raw clip from earlier in your edit. If you cut the video in another app, that export is the file TikTok sees. Open ScrubPhoto on your phone.

  1. Pick the MP4, MOV or photo. The tool reads it on your device with no upload, and its TikTok verdict says "will likely be labeled" when C2PA is present.
  2. Tap Scrub. For video, the C2PA, XMP, udta and meta boxes are renamed and zero-filled in place. The file stays the same size, the picture and sound are untouched, nothing is re-encoded, and a large file takes about a second.
  3. Save the clean file with Share on a phone, or Download on a computer.
  4. In TikTok, tap Add post +, upload the clean copy, and set the AI-generated content setting to match what the content is.

Photos work the same way, and JPEG, PNG and WebP keep identical pixels. If you only want to see what a clip carries, use the checker. The video metadata page explains what lives in those boxes, including the location and device data phones write.

What scrubbing cannot change on TikTok

  • A label on a video that is already up. TikTok says neither label can be removed after posting. Deleting and reposting a clean copy means starting over on views, likes and comments. The TikTok label guide weighs that choice.
  • Videos made with TikTok AI effects. TikTok labels those itself.
  • TikTok's invisible watermark. A video that already went through TikTok with C2PA attached may carry it, and a download of that video may still hold it. No metadata tool reaches it.
  • Other watermarks in the pixels, like Google's SynthID in Veo video. See can you remove SynthID.
  • Reports from viewers. TikTok lets anyone report unlabeled AI content under Misinformation, then Deepfakes, synthetic media, and manipulated media.

Questions about the TikTok AI-generated label

How do I remove the AI label on a TikTok video?

You cannot remove it from a posted video. TikTok's support page says an auto label cannot be removed, and its Creator Academy page says the same for the creator label. The only route is to delete the video, scrub the original file, and post it again, which resets its views and comments.

Can I turn off the AI-generated content setting after posting?

No. TikTok's Creator Academy page says you cannot edit or remove the label after posting at this time. Check the setting under More options before you tap Post.

Why did TikTok label my video AI-generated when I didn't use AI?

Look at the file and the effects. A TikTok AI effect triggers the label, and so does C2PA from an app you exported through. Run the original through the checker to see whether it carries C2PA and which app signed it.

Does the AI-generated label hurt views on TikTok?

TikTok says turning on the AI-generated content setting won't affect distribution as long as the content follows the Community Guidelines.

Does a video downloaded from TikTok carry Content Credentials?

TikTok said in May 2024 that it would attach Content Credentials to TikTok content and that they remain when the content is downloaded. Run a download through the checker to see what it carries today.

Can ScrubPhoto remove TikTok's AI watermark?

No. TikTok describes its watermark as invisible and readable only by TikTok, and it sits in the content, not in the metadata. ScrubPhoto removes metadata only and does not detect or remove watermarks.
