EXIF remover: remove EXIF data from photos and keep them upright

EXIF is the block of camera data inside a photo: make and model, lens, serial number, capture time, software and GPS location.

  • No upload. Works offline once the page loads.
  • Lossless. Every pixel kept, byte for byte.
  • Free. No sign-up, no limits.

No photo handy?

To remove EXIF data, choose your photos above and tap the Scrub button. ScrubPhoto deletes the whole EXIF block, GPS and serial numbers included, and writes back exactly one tag, orientation, when the photo needs it to display the right way up. The pixels are never decoded or changed.

What EXIF data holds

EXIF is a structured list of tags that the camera or phone writes at the moment of capture. The readout chips in the tool show the ones that matter most for privacy:

All of it goes. Other metadata families, like XMP, IPTC and C2PA, are covered on the photo metadata remover and C2PA remover pages.

Why the EXIF remover keeps the orientation tag

Many photos are stored sideways and rely on the orientation tag to tell apps how to turn them. Strip that tag and a portrait shot can open on its side. Before removing EXIF, ScrubPhoto reads orientation. If it is anything other than the default value of 1, the tool writes a minimal EXIF block that holds that single tag and nothing else, and the result card says something like "kept orientation = 6". No other EXIF is ever written, and no camera data is ever invented.

Remove EXIF data on iPhone

Apple's HEIF support page says the camera format setting decides the file type: High Efficiency saves HEIF, and Most Compatible saves JPEG. JPEGs are scrubbed losslessly. HEIC files open in Safari, where ScrubPhoto re-saves them as JPEG at quality 95 and marks them "re-encoded, not lossless".

For location, Apple's personal safety guide describes two switches: turn off Location under Options in the Share Sheet for one share, or set the Camera to Never in Location Services to stop tagging new photos. Neither is described as touching the camera model or serial data, which is where the EXIF remover comes in. After scrubbing in Safari, tap Share, then Save Image. Remove EXIF data on Android

Google's Pixel Camera help says you can turn off Save location in the camera settings to stop location stamps. Other brands put a similar switch in their own camera settings, so look there. Two Android details matter here. Samsung and Google motion photos store a short video after the JPEG, and ScrubPhoto removes that trailing data, so the clean copy is a still photo. And Chrome on Android cannot open HEIC, so convert those to JPEG first. Once installed from the browser, ScrubPhoto shows up in the Android share sheet. See remove metadata on Android.

Why EXIF alone rarely triggers an AI label

Meta has said it labels files by reading C2PA Content Credentials and IPTC metadata, and TikTok reads Content Credentials. Neither announcement names EXIF. So when the only AI hint in a photo is an editor's name in the EXIF Software tag, with no C2PA, the checker rates the label risk as "unlikely". If your photo was labeled anyway, the cause is usually somewhere else: a C2PA manifest, an IPTC tag in XMP, your own disclosure, or a watermark in the pixels. The limits page explains the last two.

Questions about removing EXIF data

How do I remove EXIF data from a photo?

Choose the photo above, tap Scrub, then Download or Share the copy that ends in "-scrubbed". The original stays on your device unchanged.

Does removing EXIF data remove the location?

Yes. GPS lives in its own block inside EXIF, and ScrubPhoto removes the whole thing. Check the clean copy in the metadata viewer to confirm.

How do I remove EXIF data on iPhone?

Open the site in Safari, pick photos from your library, scrub them and use Share, then Save Image. Use Most Compatible in the camera format setting if you want lossless results every time.

How do I remove EXIF data on Android?

Open the site in Chrome, pick the photos and scrub. If you install ScrubPhoto from the browser, you can send photos to it straight from the share sheet.

How do I remove EXIF data on a Mac?

Open the site in any current browser and drag photos onto the page. The Mac and Windows guide has more detail.

Why does my photo still have an orientation tag after scrubbing?

On purpose. Without it, a sideways-stored photo would display on its side. It is the only tag ScrubPhoto ever writes back.

Is EXIF the same thing as metadata?

EXIF is one kind. A photo can also carry XMP, IPTC, C2PA Content Credentials and PNG text, and ScrubPhoto removes all of them in the same pass.

Is an EXIF cleaner the same as an EXIF remover?

Yes. Cleaner, remover and stripper are three names for the same job: delete the EXIF block and keep the picture. ScrubPhoto does it without re-saving the image, so the pixels stay identical.
