Pinterest AI modified label: how Pins get it and what you can do
Updated
Yes, Pinterest labels AI. In April 2025 it announced an AI modified label for image Pins it believes were generated or modified with AI. It decides by reading the image's IPTC metadata, by running its own classifiers that can flag images with no markers at all, and by what the Pin's owner says. Cleaning the metadata takes away one of those three routes, not the other two.
Check a file for Pinterest label triggers or scrub it now. Both run in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
How Pinterest decides a Pin is AI modified
Pinterest announced the label in its newsroom post Introducing Gen AI Labels on April 30 2025. It said it analyzes an image's metadata and has also developed classifiers that automatically detect Gen AI content, even when the content has no obvious markers.
Pinterest's help page, Gen AI labels, adds the detail that matters for a file tool. It says Pinterest analyzes a Pin's metadata following the IPTC Metadata Standard. IPTC is the photo industry's metadata format, and it includes a field called digital source type that apps fill with values meaning created by AI or edited with AI. The same help page says some Pins get the label because the content owner indicated the Pin was generated or modified with AI.
Put together, Pinterest uses three signals:
- What the file says, through IPTC metadata.
- What the picture looks like, through classifiers that need no metadata.
- What the owner says about the Pin.
A metadata tool only reaches the first. On Pinterest a clean file lowers one risk, and a classifier can still decide on its own.
Where the AI modified label appears
On a regular Pin, the label shows when someone opens the Pin in close-up. Pinterest's help page puts it at the bottom left after you click the Pin.
Ads work differently. The help page says the label does not appear on click for promoted Pins. Instead, viewers tap the ellipsis icon next to the Pin to see it with the other ad details. The wording there may say the Pin was modified with AI, contains an AI-generated person, or may be modified with AI if Pinterest's systems flagged it.
Pinterest is also giving viewers a way to see less of it. In an October 16 2025 newsroom post, Pinterest said people can reduce Gen AI content in categories prone to AI, starting with beauty, art, fashion and home decor. The control sits in Settings under refine your recommendations. A December 12 2025 update added food and drink. The same post said labels would become more noticeable as Pinterest ramps up its detection tools.
Labeling your own Pins as AI
Pinterest's help page mentions labels that come from the content owner, but it does not describe a toggle or a menu for it. When you create a Pin, look for an AI option in the Pin builder; the wording changes. If your Pin is AI art, saying so is the honest move.
Pinterest's pages we read focus on images. For AI video Pins, check Pinterest's current help page before you post. Meta, TikTok and YouTube all require disclosure for realistic AI video or audio, so check whether Pinterest asks the same.
How to upload a clean image to Pinterest
This matters most for real photos that picked up an AI tag from routine editing, like a recipe shot you only brightened and cropped in an app with AI features. Open ScrubPhoto.
- Pick the images. The tool shows the IPTC digital source type in plain words, plus any C2PA claim, the creator tool, the camera and software, and whether GPS is present.
- Tap Scrub. Your JPEG, PNG or WebP comes back with the same pixels, byte for byte, and its color profile intact.
- Use Download, or Download all for a .zip when you have a batch.
- Create the Pin and upload the clean copy.
There is a privacy side as well. Home decor, recipe and craft Pins are often shot at home, and a phone photo can carry GPS coordinates. Scrubbing removes them along with the camera serial number and the dates.
If your Pins come from your own blog or shop pages, check the image files on those pages too. The checker reads a file without changing it.
What scrubbing cannot fix on Pinterest
- Classifier labels. Pinterest says its classifiers detect Gen AI content without obvious markers, so a clean file can still be labeled.
- A label on a Pin that already has one. For a real photo that was mislabeled, appeal instead of reuploading. Pinterest says it set up an appeals system for creators and users who believe their content may be mislabeled, and its help page says to contact the support team.
- Watermarks in the pixels, like Google's SynthID. See can you remove SynthID.
- A label the owner asked for.
For the data itself, read what C2PA Content Credentials are and how to remove Content Credentials from a photo. Meta's approach is on the Instagram page, and LinkedIn's C2PA icon is on the LinkedIn, YouTube and X page.
Questions about the Pinterest AI label
Does Pinterest label AI?
Yes. Pinterest announced in April 2025 that it adds an AI modified label to image Pins it finds were generated or modified with AI. It reads IPTC metadata, runs its own classifiers, and takes the owner's word when they indicate AI use.
What does the Pinterest AI modified label mean?
It means Pinterest believes the image was generated or modified with AI, based on metadata, its classifiers, or the owner. It shows at the bottom left of the Pin in close-up. It does not tell you which of the three caused it.
How do I appeal an AI label on Pinterest?
Pinterest says it has an appeals system for people who think their content was mislabeled, and its Gen AI labels help page says to contact the support team. Keep the original file with its camera data in case support asks about it.
Can I remove the AI modified label from a Pin?
Not with a file tool. The label is on Pinterest's copy, and a classifier can apply it whatever the metadata says. If the cause was IPTC data, a scrubbed upload removes that trigger, but an appeal is the route for a Pin that is already labeled.
Why did Pinterest label my real photo as AI modified?
Either the file carried an AI tag from an editing app, or a classifier misread it. Run the original through the checker. If it shows an AI digital source type, the editor wrote it; if the file is clean, the classifier most likely made the call and an appeal is the fix.
How do I see fewer AI Pins on Pinterest?
Pinterest said in October 2025 that you can reduce Gen AI content in some categories under Settings, in refine your recommendations. The categories started with beauty, art, fashion and home decor, and food and drink were added in December 2025.
