Canva AI label: check your export before you post
Updated
We could not find a Canva help page that says what metadata its exports carry, so check your own download with the checker before you post. Canva's AI Product Terms are clear on one point: you may not remove, alter or disable provenance or metadata tags, including C2PA, from AI-generated content. ScrubPhoto fits Canva designs that contain no AI-generated content, where an AI flag in the file would be wrong.
Check a file for Instagram, TikTok and Facebook label triggers or scrub it now. Both run in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
What a Canva export may carry
Canva's AI safety page says it uses generative AI in features like Text to Image, Magic Write, Magic Edit and Translate. Any of those can put AI-generated content into a design. Whether a given download then carries C2PA, IPTC or XMP fields is not documented on the Canva pages we checked, and it may differ by feature and file type.
The checker answers that for your file. It lists any C2PA manifest with the name of the app that signed it, the IPTC digital source type, which says whether a file was created or edited with AI, the XMP creator tool and any EXIF data. It reads the file in your browser and changes nothing, so it is safe to run on anything.
Which platforms react to a Canva design
Meta's check covers Instagram, Facebook and Threads. A post gets labeled when its file holds C2PA or IPTC AI indicators, or when the person posting says AI was involved. Instagram shows the result as AI info, which some people now see worded as AI content; its first name was Made with AI. TikTok looks for Content Credentials, and since a May 2024 announcement it labels files that carry them on its own. If your design is headed to Pinterest or LinkedIn, check that platform's help page, or start with our Pinterest page and LinkedIn, YouTube and X page.
When removing metadata from a Canva design is fine
Say the design uses your own photos, your own text and Canva's ordinary layout tools. Nothing in it was generated by AI. If the checker still finds an AI indicator, the file is describing the design wrongly, and scrubbing it fixes an error. The same goes for a creator tool or other fields you simply do not want to publish.
Now say the design contains output from Canva's AI tools. Canva's AI Product Terms, effective June 26, 2026, prohibit removing provenance or metadata tags from that content. ScrubPhoto will not tell you to break an agreement you accepted. Canva's help on using its AI features safely also says disclosure is best practice when you share content made with AI assistance. The honest fix there is to keep the label, or rebuild the design with the AI element swapped for your own photo, then export and check again.
How to check and clean a Canva download
- Download the design from Canva as a PNG, JPG or MP4.
- Add it to the tool and read the verdict for each platform.
- If the design has no AI-generated content, tap Scrub, then Download or Share.
PNG and JPG downloads keep every pixel and the same color profile, so brand colors do not shift. Several files at once can go out as one .zip with Download all. MP4 videos are cleaned in place: the metadata boxes are blanked, the file size stays the same, and nothing is re-encoded. For video detail, see our video metadata page.
What ScrubPhoto cannot do for a Canva design
It cannot change anything visible in the design, and it cannot remove a label you or a teammate added when posting. Platforms may also label for reasons outside the file, so a clean checker result is not a promise. For video there is one more rule: Meta requires a disclosure whenever a photorealistic video or a realistic audio track was made or edited digitally. Our limits page lists every case the tool cannot touch.
Questions about Canva and AI labels
Why does my Canva design get an AI label on Instagram?
Meta labels files that carry C2PA or IPTC AI indicators. If your design used one of Canva's generative features, the export may carry them. Run the file through the checker to see the metadata Meta looks for.
Is it allowed to remove C2PA metadata from Canva AI images?
Not under Canva's own rules. Its AI Product Terms, effective June 26, 2026, prohibit removing, altering or disabling provenance or metadata tags, including C2PA, from AI-generated content. Keep the data on any design that contains Canva AI output.
Will ScrubPhoto change how my Canva design looks?
No. For PNG, JPG and WebP, ScrubPhoto lifts out the metadata and leaves the image data alone, so every pixel and the color profile stay exactly as Canva exported them.
Can I scrub a Canva video?
Yes, for MP4 files. ScrubPhoto blanks the metadata boxes in place without re-encoding, so the video and audio are untouched and a large file takes about a second.
