How to remove AI metadata from a video before Reels or TikTok
Updated
AI video tools that follow the C2PA standard write Content Credentials into a uuid box inside the MP4 or MOV, and iPhone videos keep Apple's GPS location and device details in metadata boxes of their own. ScrubPhoto neutralizes those boxes in your browser without re-encoding, so the video and audio stay exactly as they were and the file size does not change. TikTok reads C2PA in video while Meta mostly relies on you to disclose AI video, so metadata is only part of what decides a label.
What metadata sits inside an AI video or an iPhone video
An MP4 or MOV file is built from boxes, each with a size and a four-letter type. The big ones hold the video frames, the audio and the index that tells a player where everything is. A few hold metadata, and those are the ones that matter before you post:
- A C2PA uuid box carries the Content Credentials manifest: the signed record of which tool made the video and whether AI was involved.
- An XMP uuid box can carry the creator tool and an IPTC digital source type such as "created by AI".
- The udta and meta boxes are where iPhone videos keep Apple's GPS location, the device model and the software.
AI video exports can carry the first kind. OpenAI's Sora 2 system card, published in September 2025, listed C2PA metadata on all assets plus a visible moving watermark on videos downloaded from sora.com or the Sora app. TikTok is another. TikTok has said that AI content created in its app gets Content Credentials that stay on the file after download, so a TikTok download you repost elsewhere can carry its own manifest.
The checker lists which of these boxes a video has, and shows "GPS: present" when Apple's location is there, without displaying the coordinates.
How removing metadata from MP4 and MOV works without re-encoding
Re-exporting a video from an editing app means decoding every frame and compressing it again, which takes time and can cost quality.
ScrubPhoto does something narrower. It finds each metadata box, changes its type to "free" (the type the format uses for unused space), and fills its contents with zeros. Every box keeps its size and position, so every offset in the file still points to the right place. Nothing is re-muxed, and the video and audio data are untouched down to the byte.
Three things follow from that. The scrubbed file is exactly the same size as the original. A large video scrubs in about a second. And because the work happens in your browser, the video never leaves your phone or computer. The video metadata remover page goes deeper on MP4, MOV and M4V.
How TikTok and Instagram Reels treat AI metadata in video
TikTok reads it. Its May 2024 announcement said automatic AI labels for uploads from certain other platforms were rolling out on videos as well as images, driven by Content Credentials. A November 2025 update said TikTok would keep reading C2PA and would start adding invisible watermarks to uploads that arrive with Content Credentials. That update also repeats that realistic AI-generated content must be labeled by the person posting it. The TikTok page covers its labels in detail.
Meta mostly does not, for now. Its February 2024 post explained that AI video and audio tools were not yet writing these markers at the scale image tools were, so Meta could not detect them in most third-party video. Its answer was a disclosure tool, required when a post shows photorealistic video or carries realistic audio made or changed digitally, with possible penalties for staying quiet. On a Reel, the result shows up as the AI info label (Instagram has also shown it as AI content, and first called it Made with AI).
So the metadata does different jobs on each app. On TikTok, a C2PA box in your file is a direct trigger for a label. On Reels, the label mostly comes from what you disclose, and the metadata matters more for privacy, since GPS boxes can reveal where you filmed.
Remove AI metadata from a video before posting: step by step
This works on iPhone, Android and desktop.
- Open the home tool in your browser.
- Choose the video from your camera roll or files. You can add photos in the same batch.
- Read the readout: C2PA and the signing app, "GPS: present", and the list of metadata boxes. The verdict row shows what TikTok, Instagram and Facebook are likely to do.
- Tap Scrub. The result card shows what was removed, and the file size stays the same.
- On a phone, tap Share to save the clean copy or send it to an app. On a computer, click Download.
- Post the clean copy, not the original.
One habit saves trouble. Scrub the final export, the exact file you will upload, and run it through the checker one more time. If you open the clean video in an editing app afterward and export again, check the new file too, because the app may write fresh metadata.
On Android, installing ScrubPhoto from the browser puts it in the share sheet, so you can send a video to it straight from your gallery. iPhone Safari does not support that, so on iPhone you open the site and use the buttons inside the tool.
What removing video metadata cannot fix
Metadata is the only layer this tool touches. Several things sit outside it:
- Visible watermarks drawn into the frames, like a moving watermark from a video generator. ScrubPhoto leaves them in place and gives no tips for removing them.
- Invisible watermarks in frames or audio. Google's SynthID lives in the pixels and audio samples, and TikTok said in November 2025 that it would add its own invisible watermark to some uploads. Our SynthID guide explains why no metadata tool reaches those.
- Platform detection, and labels already applied to a live post. A scrubbed file changes neither.
- Disclosure rules. Removing a C2PA box does not change what TikTok's or Meta's rules ask of you when a video looks real and was made or altered with AI.
If your video was made with AI and looks real, label it. The TikTok label guide covers the label once a post is up, and does Instagram remove metadata explains what platforms read at upload.
Questions about removing AI metadata from video
How do I remove C2PA from a video?
Open ScrubPhoto, add the MP4 or MOV, and tap Scrub. The tool overwrites the C2PA uuid box with zeros and relabels it as a "free" box, so the manifest is gone while the video and audio data stay identical. Run the result through the checker to confirm.
Does removing metadata from an MP4 reduce quality?
Not with this method. Nothing is decoded or re-encoded, and the frames and audio are the same bytes as before. Only the metadata boxes change, which is why the file size stays the same.
Will TikTok still label my AI video after I remove the metadata?
It can. TikTok says it uses its own detection models alongside Content Credentials, and it requires creators to label realistic AI content. Removing the C2PA box only takes away one trigger.
Does Instagram read AI metadata in Reels?
Not for most Reels. Meta said in 2024 that its detection did not yet cover most video from other companies, so for Reels it leans on people disclosing AI content. Check Meta's current rules before posting, because they change.
How do I remove location from an iPhone video?
Scrub the video before you post it. Apple stores the GPS location in metadata boxes inside the MOV or MP4, and ScrubPhoto neutralizes those boxes along with the device model and software. The checker shows "GPS: present" before and nothing after.
Can I remove AI metadata from a video on my phone?
Yes. The tool runs in mobile browsers on iPhone and Android, with no app to install and no upload. After scrubbing, use Share to save the clean copy or send it to the app you post from.
