AI content or AI info on your Instagram post: why does it say that?

Updated

Your Instagram post says AI content or AI info (Meta's help pages now use AI content, and the label launched in 2024 as Made with AI) because Meta found an AI signal in the file, or because the Add AI label switch was on when you shared it. The signal is usually C2PA Content Credentials or IPTC metadata that an editing app wrote into the export, so a real photo can pick it up from a single AI-assisted edit. Check what your file says, remove that data from a copy, and post the copy.

What AI info means on Instagram

Meta said in February and April 2024 that it labels images when it detects "industry standard AI image indicators" in the file, or when the person posting discloses AI use. In practice those indicators are two kinds of metadata. C2PA Content Credentials are a signed record of how a file was made and edited. IPTC metadata includes a field called the digital source type, which can say an image was created or edited with AI.

So the label describes the file, not a verdict on your photo. A system read a note inside the file and acted on it. Instagram's own help page adds that not all AI content contains the information needed to identify it, which tells you the label tracks signals rather than truth.

The label also comes in two strengths. Instagram's help page on labeling AI content says files with signals showing they were created with AI get the AI content label right on the post. Files whose signals show they were only modified with AI get no label on the post itself. Those details sit in the post's options menu instead, a change Meta announced on September 12, 2024.

What does AI content mean on Instagram? Same label, new name

Meta launched the label as Made with AI in May 2024. Meta then said content with minor AI edits, like retouching, was getting that tag, and on July 1, 2024 it renamed the label AI info. In September 2024 the label for AI-edited content moved into the menu. Instagram's help pages now use the words AI content for the label on the post, and searches for "what does ai content mean on instagram" jumped in October 2025 when many people first saw it.

The rules underneath have stayed the same, so if your screen shows yet another wording, trust the app.

Why does my Instagram post say AI info when I didn't use AI?

The answer is usually an app you trusted to make a normal edit. Run the original through the checker to see which of these applies.

Editing apps that write C2PA or IPTC into the export

Instagram's help page gives a plain example: photo editing tools that use AI to change the size or color of an image may add a signal showing the content was modified using AI. A resize, an auto color fix or a sky swap can count. You thought of it as editing. The app thought of it as AI and wrote that into the file. Editors that support the C2PA standard can also attach Content Credentials when you export. The Lightroom and Photoshop pages explain how to read what yours wrote.

Generative tools hidden inside normal editors

Remove-object brushes, generative fill and expand-the-frame tools now sit next to the exposure slider in many apps. Use one to erase a stray cup from a table and the file may describe itself as AI-edited from then on. The edit can cover a few hundred pixels. The note covers the whole image.

AI edits made on your phone

Google said in October 2024 that photos edited with Magic Editor, Magic Eraser and Zoom Enhance include IPTC metadata showing they were edited with generative AI. Samsung and Apple phones have their own erase and edit tools, and what each one writes can change with a software update, so test your own export. See the pages for Samsung Galaxy AI, Pixel Magic Editor and iPhone Clean Up.

Images that started in Meta AI

Instagram's help page says content made with Meta AI tools, then downloaded and uploaded again, still gets the AI content label. Meta said in February 2024 that its AI images carry an invisible watermark along with IPTC metadata. Removing metadata does not touch that watermark, so a Meta AI image will likely stay labeled whatever you do to the file.

Why does my Instagram draft say AI info, or my Story?

If a draft shows AI info before you share it, the cause is the file you picked or the Add AI label switch, not your caption, filter or hashtags. The same rules cover Stories and Reels, and Meta's help pages name posts, stories, reels and threads as places where the label or the menu details can appear. The Story guide covers the steps for Stories.

What to do when a real photo gets the AI label

  1. Find the original file in your camera roll or export folder. A screenshot or a copy saved back from Instagram is a different file.
  2. Open it in the checker. It shows whether C2PA is present and which app signed it, the IPTC digital source type, the XMP creator tool and the EXIF software field, then gives a verdict for Instagram.
  3. If the checker finds an AI signal on a photo you took, open the ScrubPhoto tool and scrub a copy. For JPEG, PNG and WebP it removes the metadata without decoding the image, so the pixels in the copy are identical to the original. The color profile and orientation stay. A HEIC photo is re-saved as a high-quality JPEG instead, and the tool says so.
  4. Post the scrubbed copy. If the labeled post is already live, read how to remove AI info after posting.

Neither step sends your photo anywhere. The checker and the scrubber both read the file inside the browser tab you already have open.

What a clean file cannot change

Metadata is one signal. Meta can also label a post because you switched the label on, because a Meta AI image carries an invisible watermark, or because its own systems flagged it. Nobody outside Meta can promise a post will go up without a label, and this tool does not. Meta also requires you to label photorealistic video and realistic-sounding audio that was digitally created or altered, and says it may apply penalties if you don't. Cleaning a file is for real photos and your privacy, never for passing off AI work as camera work. The Instagram page has the full picture of how Instagram decides.

Questions about the AI info label on Instagram

What does AI info mean on Instagram?

It means Meta found an AI signal in the file, or the person posting added the label. The signal is usually C2PA Content Credentials or IPTC metadata. It is a statement about what the file carried, not proof the image is fake.

What does AI content mean on Instagram?

AI content is the newer wording for the same label. Instagram's help pages use it for posts whose files signal they were created with AI. Content that was only edited with AI shows its details in the post's options menu instead.

Is the Made with AI label the same as AI info?

Yes. Made with AI was the original name in May 2024. Meta changed it to AI info on July 1, 2024, after minor edits like retouching were getting the same tag as fully generated images.

Why does Instagram show AI info on a photo I edited in Facetune?

We have not verified what Facetune writes into its exports, and app behavior changes with updates. Run your exported photo through the checker. If it shows C2PA or an IPTC AI source type, that is the trigger, and a scrubbed copy will not carry it.

Will removing metadata stop Instagram from labeling my post?

It removes the most common trigger, but it is not a promise. The label can also come from the Add AI label switch, an invisible watermark or Meta's own detection.

Does AI info show up on Reels too?

Yes. Instagram's help page describes the same label rules for posts, stories, reels and threads. For video, Meta said it cannot yet read AI signals in most third-party video and audio, so it leans on people disclosing it themselves.
