How to remove AI content (AI info) from an Instagram story

Updated

A Story gets the AI content label (also worded AI info, and first called Made with AI) for the same reasons a post does: an AI signal inside the file, or the Add AI label switch turned on when you shared it. Instagram's help pages show no way to take the label off a Story that is already up, so delete that Story, scrub the original photo or video, and share the clean copy. Or wait it out, since a Story leaves your profile and Feed after 24 hours unless you pinned it to your profile.

Check and scrub your file here

It runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and the result is lossless.

Drop files here or paste an image. Photo on your phone? Open scrubphoto.com there.

  • No upload. Works offline once the page loads.
  • Lossless. Every pixel kept, byte for byte.
  • Free. No sign-up, no limits.

Why does Instagram say AI info on my story?

Stories are not judged by separate rules. Meta's help pages describe the AI content label, and the AI details in the options menu, for posts, stories, reels and threads alike. Meta's Transparency Center counted more than 24 million labeled Instagram stories that people viewed between October 1 and 29, 2024, so this happens to a lot of accounts.

Three things tend to put a label on a Story:

  • The file carries C2PA Content Credentials or an IPTC field naming AI as the source. This is the likely cause when a real photo passed through an editing app first.
  • You made the image with Meta AI. Instagram's help page says Meta AI content shared directly to a story may be labeled above or on the content, and some of it carries a visible Imagined with AI watermark.
  • The label was switched on while you were sharing.

To see which one applies, run the original file through the checker. If it finds no metadata trigger, the label most likely came from the switch, a watermark or Meta's own detection.

Check the Add AI label switch on your Story

Instagram's help page gives the Story steps for the iPhone and Android apps. After you pick a photo or video for your story, tap Options in your story, tap Label AI, then use the toggle next to Add AI label. If that toggle was on for a photo you took yourself, that is your answer, and you decide whether to leave it off next time.

Don't leave it off for the wrong reasons. Meta requires a label on photorealistic video and realistic-sounding audio that was digitally created or altered, and says penalties may apply when people skip it. A Story clip with a realistic AI voiceover or a lifelike AI scene needs the switch on.

How to remove AI info from an Instagram story after posting

  1. Open your story by tapping Your story at the top of Feed.
  2. On iPhone, tap More in the bottom right of the photo or video, tap Delete story, then tap Delete again. On Android, tap Options in the bottom right, then tap Delete twice.
  3. If you also shared that story to Facebook, Instagram offers Delete from both so the labeled copy goes away there too.
  4. Find the original file on your phone and scrub a copy in the tool. On iPhone, tap Share and then Save Image. On Android, tap Download or Share.
  5. Share the clean copy to your story, and check the Label AI setting before you post it.

Views, replies and sticker responses on the deleted Story do not carry over to the new one. For a Story with only a few hours left, waiting may cost you less than reposting.

Stories saved to your archive or pinned to your profile

Instagram's help page says Stories disappear from your profile, Feed and Direct inbox after 24 hours unless you pin them to your profile, in the row of circles under your bio. Instagram also saves Stories to your Stories Archive automatically unless you turned that off. So a labeled Story can outlive its day in two places. If you pinned it to your profile, remove it from that collection. If you don't want the labeled version sitting in your archive, Instagram has a separate help page for deleting a story from the archive.

Video Stories and Reels

Video works differently on Meta's side. Meta said it cannot yet read AI signals in most third-party video and audio, so it relies on people disclosing AI video themselves. That makes a video Story labeled AI info more likely to come from the switch, a Meta AI tool, or a clip that does carry readable credentials. ScrubPhoto cleans MP4 and MOV files in place: the metadata boxes are renamed and zero-filled, the video and audio data are untouched, and nothing is re-encoded. The video guide goes deeper on Reels.

What a clean copy cannot remove from a Story

A visible watermark is part of the picture. If Meta AI stamped Imagined with AI on the image, scrubbing metadata leaves that stamp exactly where it is, because the pixels don't change. Invisible watermarks stay too. Meta places one in Meta AI images, and no metadata tool can see or remove it. The Instagram page lists the ways Instagram can decide to label something.

Questions about AI info on Instagram Stories

Why does Instagram say AI info on my story?

The file carried an AI signal like C2PA Content Credentials or IPTC AI data, the Add AI label switch was on, or the image came from Meta AI. Check the original file in the checker to rule out the first cause.

How do I remove AI info from an Instagram story after posting?

Delete the Story, scrub the original file, and share the clean copy as a new Story. Instagram's help pages show no switch that removes the label from a Story that is already live.

Can I turn off AI info on an Instagram story?

You control the Add AI label switch under Options and Label AI before you share. You can't turn off a label Meta adds on its own from signals in the file. The guide to turning off the AI label explains the difference.

Why does my Story say Imagined with AI?

Instagram's help page says some content made with Meta AI tools carries a visible Imagined with AI watermark. That mark is drawn into the image, so removing metadata does not affect it.

If I delete the Story on Instagram, is it gone from Facebook too?

Only if you choose Delete from both. Instagram's help page offers that option when the Story was shared to Facebook. Otherwise, delete it in each app.

Should I just wait 24 hours?

For many Stories, yes. The Story leaves your profile and Feed after a day unless you pinned it to your profile. Clean the file before you post the next one so the same signal doesn't come back.
