The AI creator label on an Instagram profile
Updated
The AI creator label is an account-level label that Instagram renamed AI-generated profile on August 31, 2026, and it marks profiles that regularly feature an AI-generated person instead of a human. It is separate from the AI info label on single posts (now worded AI content, and first called Made with AI), and it is a setting you add or remove yourself in Edit profile. Cleaning photo files has no effect on it.
What the AI creator label on Instagram is
Instagram announced on its creators blog on August 31, 2026 that it was renaming the AI creator label to the AI-generated profile label. The stated reason was to make it clearer when a profile features an AI-generated person rather than a human. The post said the change built on a test of the AI creator label earlier in the year.
Instagram's help page on AI-generated profiles says the label means the account regularly posts content featuring an AI-generated person. People see it in several places:
- On the account's profile page, or next to the profile in search.
- Next to the account's content in Feed, Reels and Stories.
- Next to comments or messages from the account.
The help page is clear that the label applies to the account as a whole. The AI content label on a post is a different thing, decided file by file. Meta's general help page on identifying AI content still uses the older name AI creator, so you may see both names for a while.
Who needs the AI-generated profile label
Accounts whose public face is an AI-generated person. Think of a virtual influencer, or a character built entirely with image and video generators. Instagram's blog says creators don't need the label simply because they use AI tools as part of their creative process. A photographer who retouches with AI tools, or a shop owner who drafts captions with a chatbot, is not running an AI-generated profile.
On reach, Instagram's help page says using the label neither helps nor hurts. Skipping it when it applies is what costs you. Accounts Instagram believes are AI-generated profiles without the label may become ineligible to appear in recommendations until they add it. The blog says creators who add it on their own see no change to their reach.
How to remove the AI label from an Instagram profile, or add it
The setting lives in your profile, according to Instagram's help page on labeling AI content:
- Go to your profile.
- Tap Edit profile.
- Use the toggle next to AI-generated profile.
Turn it on to add the label. If you had the older AI creator label, Instagram's blog says you'll see the new name and can review it, keep it if it still fits, or remove it if it no longer applies. Turning the toggle off is how you remove it when your account doesn't feature an AI-generated person. If your account does feature one, keep it on. Removing it to pass as human would mislead your followers, and by Instagram's own account it puts your recommendations at risk.
If Instagram flags a real account
Instagram's blog says it notifies unlabeled profiles that it detects as featuring an AI-generated person. Those creators can open Account Status to see whether the profile is no longer eligible for recommendations. If you think the decision is a mistake, the blog says you can appeal through Account Status, and a successful appeal makes the profile and its content eligible again.
Instagram's help page on Account Status describes the general pattern for professional accounts. You open the Recommendations Guidelines section, review what it flags, and tap Disagree with decision if you think it got things wrong. The exact screens for an AI profile flag may differ, so follow what the app shows you.
AI creator replies in chats are a different label
Some people searching "remove ai creator label instagram" are looking at something else entirely. Where the feature is available, Instagram lets creators build an AI based on themselves through Meta AI Studio, and that AI can auto-reply to direct messages and story replies. Instagram's help page says those replies are marked "AI ยท creator name" in the chat. That marker belongs to the chat feature, not the profile. The creator can turn AI auto replies off, and the person chatting can switch them off in their chat settings.
What is still unknown about the profile label
Instagram has not published how it detects AI-generated profiles, so nobody outside Meta can tell you what triggers a flag. Instagram's pages describe notifications and lost recommendations for unlabeled accounts, not a label that gets added for you. Facebook's help page, by contrast, says an AI creator label may be applied on Facebook when Meta detects AI content, and Instagram has not said whether it will do the same. The setting may also not have reached every region or app version yet, so check Edit profile in your own app.
Why cleaning files won't change a profile label
ScrubPhoto works on files. It removes C2PA Content Credentials, IPTC and other metadata from a photo or video, and for JPEG, PNG, WebP, MP4 and MOV it leaves the image and video data untouched. A profile label is a setting on your account, so no file you upload can add or remove it. Where the tool helps is the per-post label: if your account features a real person and your real photos keep picking up AI info from an editing app, run them through the checker and post clean copies from the tool. Meta requires a label on photorealistic video and realistic-sounding audio that was digitally created or altered, so that kind of content keeps its disclosure either way. The Instagram page covers the per-post rules in full.
