Samsung Galaxy AI watermark and AI label: what each one is

Updated

When a Galaxy AI tool like Generative Edit creates new pixels, Samsung draws a visible AI watermark into the bottom-left corner of the saved image and, by its own account, marks the file's metadata as well. The Galaxy S25 series also supports Content Credentials, the C2PA data that Instagram and TikTok read for AI labels. ScrubPhoto can show and remove the metadata, but the watermark is part of the picture itself, so it stays.

What the Samsung AI watermark is and where it appears

Samsung describes the mark in plain terms. Its Canadian guide to generative photo editing says images generated by AI include an AI watermark in the bottom-left corner. Samsung's US help page on Gallery's AI editing tools gives the same warning in shorter form: AI-generated images get a Galaxy AI watermark. And when Samsung launched the Galaxy S24 in January 2024, a footnote explained that the visible watermark is overlaid on the image when you save it, to show the image was generated by AI.

The US page also walks through Photo assist. You open a photo in Gallery, tap the Edit icon, then the Photo assist icon, and work with tools like AI Eraser, Move, Create and Style. The last step is Save as copy, so the unedited original should still sit in your Gallery. Samsung adds that Generative Edit needs a network connection and a Samsung account, and saves a resized photo of up to 12MP.

The key point for everything below: this watermark is drawn into the image. It is pixels, exactly like the rest of the photo, and it is not metadata.

What Samsung writes into the file's metadata

Samsung's Galaxy S24 announcement said that whenever the phone uses generative AI on an image, a watermark appears on the image and in metadata. None of the Samsung pages we read list the exact fields it writes.

For the Galaxy S25 series, Samsung said in February 2025 that the phones support Content Credentials, based on the C2PA standard, to make content created and edited with generative AI more transparent. Samsung also joined the C2PA as a member. It did not spell out which edits get a manifest.

So look at your own file instead of guessing. Open the checker on your phone and pick the edited copy. It will show whether the photo carries C2PA and which app signed it, any IPTC digital source type such as "edited with AI", the XMP creator tool, and trailing data. Samsung motion photos can also hold a short video appended after the image, which shows up as trailing data. Our Samsung Galaxy AI page covers this source app on its own.

Why a Galaxy AI edit can get an AI label on Instagram

Meta's automatic AI labels come from two kinds of file data: a C2PA manifest and IPTC fields that say AI was involved. If your Galaxy AI edit carries either, Instagram can show the AI info label (Instagram has also shown it as AI content, and first called it Made with AI). An edit, as opposed to a fully generated image, gets the quieter treatment Meta announced in September 2024: the label sits behind the post's menu. The Instagram page explains the rules, and our guide on why a post says AI info lists other triggers.

On TikTok, a Galaxy photo with a C2PA manifest can be labeled automatically, since TikTok reads Content Credentials on upload. See the TikTok page for how that label works.

Metadata is only part of it. Both platforms take your own disclosure into account, and Meta has said it is building classifiers to detect AI content that carries no markers at all. And a visible watermark is, by design, visible. Anyone scrolling past can see it, whatever the file's metadata says.

Remove AI generated label data from a Samsung photo (metadata only)

This is the part ScrubPhoto handles. It runs in your phone's browser and never uploads the photo.

  1. Open the home tool in your browser on the Galaxy phone.
  2. Tap the button to choose photos and pick the edited copy from Gallery.
  3. Read the readout and the verdict for Instagram, TikTok and Facebook.
  4. Tap Scrub. For a JPEG, the pixels come out byte-for-byte identical, with the color profile and orientation kept.
  5. Tap Share to send the clean copy to an app, or Download it.

On Android you can also install ScrubPhoto as an app from the browser. Once installed, it appears in the share sheet, so you can send photos to it straight from Gallery. If the photo is a HEIC file, Chrome on Android cannot decode it, and the tool will ask you to convert it to JPEG first.

Scrubbing also makes sense on Galaxy photos you never touched with AI. Ordinary EXIF can include GPS location, the camera model and serial numbers, and the same tool clears all of it.

What ScrubPhoto will not do with the Samsung watermark

We do not remove visible watermarks, and we do not give tips for erasing them. The Galaxy AI mark is how Samsung discloses that an image was generated with AI. Invisible watermarks sit on that same pixel layer. SynthID, which Google embeds in its AI output, is one example, and metadata tools cannot touch it. Our SynthID guide explains that side.

If you want a photo with no AI mark on it, post the original you shot rather than the AI-edited copy. If you do post the edit, labeling it yourself is always an option. And if you move on to AI video or audio that looks or sounds real, expect platform rules to ask you to disclose it.

Removing metadata never guarantees a post will go unlabeled. It takes away the file-level triggers, and that is all.

Questions about the Samsung AI watermark and label

Is there a way to remove the AI generated label on a Samsung photo?

There are two different things here. The visible Galaxy AI watermark is part of the image, so ScrubPhoto leaves it alone and we do not give tips for erasing it. The metadata Samsung writes, including Content Credentials on newer phones, can be checked and removed in the browser, losslessly for JPEG.

Does Samsung Generative Edit add metadata?

Yes, according to Samsung. Its Galaxy S24 announcement said a watermark appears on the image and in metadata whenever generative AI is used. Samsung does not list the fields, so run your edited copy through the checker to see exactly what is there.

Do Galaxy S25 photos have Content Credentials?

Samsung says the Galaxy S25 series supports Content Credentials for content created and edited with generative AI. Whether one particular photo carries a manifest depends on what you did to it. The checker will tell you, without uploading the file.

Does removing metadata remove the Samsung AI watermark?

No. The watermark is drawn into the pixels when the photo is saved, and metadata removal never changes pixels. A scrubbed JPEG compares pixel-identical to the file you started with, mark included.

Will Instagram label a photo edited with Galaxy AI?

It can. Meta labels files that carry C2PA or IPTC AI metadata, and it said AI-edited content gets its label in the post's menu. The visible watermark is also there for anyone to see, and Meta can rely on disclosure and its own detection.

Is my original photo kept after Generative Edit?

Samsung's steps for Photo assist end with Save as copy, which keeps your edited photo as a new file. The original should still be in Gallery, so you can post that instead.
